For UK tradespeople, delivery couriers, and fleet operators, the Ford Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom are the workhorses of British roads. However, due to daily loading, tight parking bays, and commercial demands, rear light clusters are among the most frequently damaged exterior components.
Common Causes of Transit Custom Tail Light Failure
- Physical Impact: Backing into loading bays, bollards, or high curbs cracking the polycarbonate lens.
- Water Ingress & Condensation: Degraded perimeter foam seals allowing rainwater to short the internal circuit board or bulb holder.
- Wiring Harness Corrosion: Road salt from British winters corroding the multi-pin plug pins behind the rear pillar trim.

Step-by-Step DIY Replacement (Takes 10 Minutes)
- Open Rear Barn Doors / Tailgate: Park on a flat surface, turn off ignition, and secure the doors fully open.
- Locate the Fixing Screws: On the inner pillar jamb, locate the two Torx (T25) screws holding the outer edge of the lamp housing.
- Release the Locating Pins: Gently pull the light assembly straight backwards towards the rear of the van. Do not lever sideways to avoid breaking the plastic ball studs.
- Disconnect Electrical Connector: Depress the locking tab on the multi-pin connector and pull the wiring free. Inspect the pins for corrosion.
- Install the New Assembly: Connect the plug into your new BuyDay OEM-fit replacement lamp, align the guide studs, and push firmly until seated. Secure the two T25 screws.
- Test All Functions: Verify sidelights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights, and reverse lights before driving.
