The Ford 2.0 Panther EcoBlue diesel engine, found in the Transit MK8, Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom, and Ford Ranger (2016 onwards), is infamous across the UK for its "wet belt" timing system — where the timing belt runs submerged in engine oil.
To seal this oil-filled timing cavity, Ford uses a stamped steel front cover with an integrated vulcanized perimeter gasket and crankshaft front oil seal (OEM Part Numbers: 2005433, 2301157, GK2Q-6C297-AA, GK2Q-6019-AB). Because this cover is extremely thin, removing it during a timing belt change or inspection inherently distorts the metal flange and destroys the bond of the bonded rubber seal.
Symptoms of Timing Cover & Crank Seal Failure
- Oil Dripping from Lower Timing Case: Wetness and oil drops coating the bottom of the engine sump and front subframe crossmember.
- Squealing Auxiliary Serpentine Belt: Engine oil spraying from the crankshaft pulley onto the alternator/AC belt, causing squealing noises on acceleration.
- Premature Wet Belt Contamination: Loss of internal oil containment leading to incorrect oil pressure and accelerated belt tooth degradation.
- Wet Belt Service Requirement: If your van is reaching the 6-year / 100,000-mile interval for a wet belt replacement, a new timing cover is mandatory.

Installation Best Practices
- Perfect Surface Preparation: Ensure the engine block mating surface is 100% clean, dry, and free of old oil residues or corrosion. Use degreaser and a non-abrasive scraper.
- Use Crank Seal Installation Guide: Keep the plastic installation sleeve inside the crankshaft front oil seal during placement to protect the delicate seal lip from snagging on the crank snout.
- Torque in Correct Spiral Sequence: Follow Ford's torque specifications (typically 10-12 Nm) tightening bolts from the centre outwards in a criss-cross sequence to prevent cover distortion.
- Allow Curing Time: If supplementary sealer is applied at corner seams, allow appropriate curing time before refilling with manufacturer-approved 0W-30 Castrol EcoBlue engine oil.
