Vauxhall Vivaro & Renault Trafic 1.6 CDTi / dCi Temperature Sensor Pipe Failure: Symptoms, Fault Code P242A & Replacement Guide

The 1.6-litre diesel engine fitted to the Vauxhall Vivaro B, Renault Trafic III, Nissan NV300, and Fiat Talento (2014-2022) is a popular and economical workhorse across the UK. However, one of the most frequent roadside breakdowns is caused by the failure of a small but critical rubber component: the exhaust temperature sensor hose (OEM Part Number: 223214784R / 95517912).

Because this hose sits directly downstream of the turbocharger and DPF manifold, it is subjected to blistering exhaust gas temperatures and continuous engine vibration. Over time, the factory elastomer hardens, perishes, and develops hairline splits beneath the heat reflective sleeve.

⚠️ Diagnostic Warning Signs: When this sensor hose splits, the ECU receives erroneous exhaust temperature or differential pressure data. Common symptoms include:
  • Dashboard message: "Check Injection" or "Check Anti-Pollution System"
  • OBD-II Fault Codes: P242A (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit), P242B, or P2452 (DPF Pressure Sensor)
  • Van drops into limp home mode with severe turbo boost restriction
  • Failed DPF active regenerations leading to premature soot blockage

Why Do Original Hoses Fail So Often?

The OEM rubber specification often lacks long-term thermal endurance under heavy commercial loads. When towing or driving at motorway speeds, radiant exhaust heat causes the pipe wall to soften, expand under pressure, and eventually blow out. Main dealers frequently attempt to sell complete wiring harnesses or sensors costing over £250, when in reality only the flexible sensor link pipe requires replacement.

Step-by-Step Replacement Guide (20 Minutes)

  1. Allow the Engine to Cool: Exhaust components reach over 500°C. Ensure the vehicle has cooled down completely before beginning work.
  2. Locate the Sensor Line: Located behind the engine block towards the bulkhead, connecting the metal probe tube to the sensor junction.
  3. Release Spring Hose Clips: Use hose clamp pliers to slide back the retaining spring clips at both ends of the pipe.
  4. Inspect & Clean Spigots: Remove the old split pipe and clean any carbon residue off the metal barbed spigots using a clean lint-free cloth.
  5. Fit the Heavy-Duty BuyDay Hose: Push the new heat-resistant replacement hose firmly onto both fittings and secure the spring clips in their designated grooves.
  6. Clear Diagnostic Fault Codes: Connect an OBD scanner to clear stored P242A/P2452 codes. Take the vehicle for a 15-minute drive to verify normal boost pressure and active sensor readings.
